Every college that I have known has this. It's an email address issued to every student that resembles some kind of formula. Example, My name is Randy James, I graduated in 04, and I go to Wiggypiggy University. My email address may be something like: 04rjame@wiggypiggy.edu
Well, just after those four years of college, when friends and family have just begun to memorize or understand your email address, it's time to take all of your belongings home, clean up food wrappers that you find under those dirty clothes, and head home and start applying for jobs.
You should probably ask yourself one very important question though: "When applying for jobs or changing employers the next few years, should I rely on my edu email address"? That's right. What if your college's email server is beginning to fill and they have to clean out your account. You're not longer a student there, right, so why should you need it?
Please exclude the colleges that offer a long-term email address but, when I finished college, I wanted assurance that my email was not going anywhere. Luckily, just before I graduated in '04, I had signed up for Gmail - yeah, back when it was new. And since then, the Gmail team has developed a feature that is geared towards Students who want to make the most of their Alumni Email Address.
Ok, I'm about to jump to the point: Gmail has a feature that is going to make your college Email transition a lot easier. Most likely, you're probably going to have to, eventually, get used to another email provider as you migrate away from your ancient college email address. So Gmail will help you start by providing you a simple way to check, and send college emails from your Gmail Account! Talk about a time saver.
p.s. I'm a frequent reader of the Gmail Blog. It is one of the most frequently updated blogs that I read and it's ALWAYS about cool, new features that are being implemented to Gmail.
